Proteins are one of the most important nutrients that our body needs, so you have to take adequate daily amounts. These are the building material of all life, and are essential for cell growth and tissue repair. They are made of “blocks” called amino acids. Some of these amino acids are called “essential” because the body can not manufacture and therefore must contribute them through feeding. If a protein contains all the essential amino acids, it is considered “complete”. On the other side are the “non-essential” that our body produces although we don’t obtain it from food, and “conditional” that usually are not essential except in situations of stress or illness.

What are proteins?

Proteins can be of animal or vegetable origin. All the animal proteins are complete. And despite what people think about vegetable origin, it is possible to find complete protein sources such as the quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, spirulina, hemp seeds, soya beans, chia seeds. Furthermore two incomplete vegetable proteins may be complementary: a protein can provide the amino acid lacking the other and vice versa. All vegetable foods contain protein so if you carry a varied vegetarian diet you should not have any problem with it, but should be varied 😉

Sometimes, around gyms tend to abuse the proteins even removing carbohydrates, but when we stop consuming enough carbohydrates your body begins to take energy from protein and these do not do the job for really were intended, creating a deficit on the other hand. Excessive intake of protein is bad for your liver, your kidneys and bones, plus you can produce a deficiency of vitamins and minerals.
  • Protein sources:
    Nuts, grains, legumes, chia and hemp seeds, algae, eggs, dairy, poultry and other types of lean white meat, fish, lean red meat.
